Lloyd Madurai is a prominent South African radio entrepreneur and businessman with a rich 34-year career in the radio industry. His journey began at the age of 13, when he fell in love with radio as a mobile DJ and shopping centre radio host. By 15, Lloyd was already hostinga weekend overnight show at a large commercial POP/AC radio station while still in high school in Durban. At 19, he became the first breakfast presenter on a new smooth jazz station in Durban and he also served as assistant Programme Manager.
Lloyd’s rise in the radio industry continued rapidly. By the age of 22, he was hired by South Africa's most profitable POP/AC station in Johannesburg, where he worked as Music Manager and hosted the station’s popular Friday night Party Show. By 26, he had transitioned into a Programme Manager role at a competitor station, eventually taking on more responsibilities in programming, content, and digital management.
In his 30s, Lloyd shifted towards acquiring radio stations, playing a key role in forming a consortium to acquire new licenses and purchase struggling stations. He also ventured into entrepreneurship, owning nightclubs, consulting for corporate media strategies, and running events companies. Lloyd’s most significant venture came in 2014, when he founded 919fm, a community radio station in Johannesburg. His innovative approach rapidly turned the station into a local success. In 2020, he and business partner Dirk Ackerman acquired Classic FM and rebranded it as Hot 102.7FM, a station playing old-school and R&B music. Despite regulatory hurdles, Lloyd’s strategic decision to blend formats paid off, and Hot 102.7FM quickly gained a loyal following and became one of the fastest-growing commercial stations in South Africa.
Apart from his work in radio, Lloyd is deeply committed to charity. He founded Hot 102.7FM's charity, Hot Cares, which focuses on education, humanitarian aid, medical assistance, and animal welfare. Under his leadership, the charity raised over 47 million ZAR (approximately 2.5 million USD) in just a few years through its annual Teddython fundraiser. Lloyd is also passionate about mentoring the next generation of radio professionals. He founded the Hot 1027 Radio Academy, which offers free training in radio, media, and broadcasting. Over 500 students have completed the program, with many securing jobs in the radio industry.
Lloyd’s contributions to radio have earned him numerous accolades, including being inducted into the South African Radio Hall of Fame in 2018, making him the youngest inductee in South Africa. He won the National Entrepreneur Champion award in 2023 with Hot 1027fm also winning “National Small Business Champion” and winner of the “National Community Award” for Hot’s charity work within communities. This was the first time in the 15 years of the awards that one MD or CEO took all 3 awards. Under his leadership, Hot102.7FM has also won several other prestigious awards, including “Best Local Radio Station in Johannesburg” for three consecutive years. In 2024 Hot 1027FM won the coveted title of “Most Loyal Listeners” award across all stations throughout South Africa as well as a bronze award for a news content piece New York Festival awards and the Well Received Finalist Awards in both 2023 and 2024 at the same festival.

He’s based in London and has a passion for audio and all the intimate, strange and brilliant ways it can be used to tell our stories.
It’s been a memorable, two-decade journey shaping the sound, soul, and strategy of radio. I’ve built a career rooted in creativity, intuition, and a deep understanding of how audio influences lives. My journey began as a Radio Jockey in Bengaluru, where I worked across three major radio stations and discovered the power of voice, storytelling, and the intimate connection radio creates with its listeners. Over the years, that passion evolved into a larger vision — one that blends content leadership with cultural insight and strategic thinking.
As the Regional Programming Director for Hyderabad and Chennai at Radio City, I’ve led programming ecosystems that balance innovation with audience relevance. I collaborate closely with on-air talent, creative teams, marketers, and brand partners to design shows, build IPs, and craft soundscapes that have won accolades Nationally & Internationally. From developing high-performance formats to scaling hyper-local content, I focus on creating multiplatform experiences that trigger emotion, build habit, and strengthen brand recall.
Fluent in English, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Hindi, I understand how language shapes loyalty and how regional authenticity can drive national impact. At the core of my work lies a simple belief: great content doesn’t just reach people — it stays with them.
